actually the canal was infinately more practical from an engineering and long term upkeep aspect than a desalintation plant! but that is a whole nother topic, suffice to say misinformation and media hype played to the uninformed and ignorant regarding the feasability of it. anyone that has worked with desal plants will know how expensive they are to build and to maintain.
