I'm looking at around $25k. that would be either straight-up for a road-legal one OR spend less on a not-so-hot b-reg one and do it up to the value of $25k total (those are funds as of now... 6 months is obviously a different story etc).

I think my goal is to have a track and/or light rally car which would be safe and competetive, and next year really start participating in track days, competitions, motorkanahs, the odd rally event and all other things in between (eg the recent hill climb training day) and pushing myself and the car harder each time. This would mean I plan to strip the interior and nonessential weight, fit a full welded cage with 4/5/6 point harnesses etc etc.

That's the plan. those are the purchas-price funds. cheers guys for input
