Easiest way is to pull the gearstick surround up (the plastic going around the shifter - carbon fibre looking stuff in the pic above) and rotate it 90 degrees.
This will make space for the centre dash surround (in red above) to come out. You just have to pull it firmly - it's got quiet a few clips holding it in. Be firm but don't twist etc. I don't recall there being any screws on the surround.
PS: You don't need to touch the cup holder to get the head unit out.
