Default Pick ONE lens

Okay here's my dilemma.

I'm buying a 450D this week...found one for the right price, etc, and I'd basically settled on one with the basic 18-55 lens, which would do me okay when I'm in the USA in December..

I’m not into photography in a big way, and won’t ever be....and therefore won’t ever have a need to buy lots and lots of lenses (except maybe a wide angle down the track, as I do like the idea of taking wide shots, and possibly a 50mm because its cheap and good to have).

We basically want it because I’m sick of crap point and shoot cameras, and want a nice quality photograph on holidays, etc.

I’m now deciding whether to just buy the 18-55 kit, or buy the body only and choose a decent “all purpose” canon IS lens (which can be possibly complemented some time down the track with one of the above mentioned add ons).

I’ve narrowed it down to the following Canon IS lenses.
The basic 18-55 plastic fantastic lens
17-85
28-135
18-200

I like the idea of the 18-200, because from what I understand, it’s a “dual mode” lens or something like that i.e. telephoto and wide angle. I could then complement it with the 50mm F1.8 lens later on.

What do you photo gurus think?? Am I on the right track, or does someone have a better idea?

Thanks
