For an Apple Ipod i dont think you can use anyother official program. Only perhaps the drag and drop method from "my computer"

Itunes works fine for me, i use it as my default music player as it is so easy to navigate and use. Itunes is also free if you borrow the install CD from a friend, i dont think the registration process will affect anything.
