Probably had that tone because he's sick of pulling dick heads over to tell them to turn them off, maybe thought it would sink in instead of treating you like a fucking princess.
It's been illegal for years & they are a pain in the arse for cars that you are following.........he should have taken a hammer to them instead!
You should have just said sorry mate, turned them off & thanked your lucky stars that you were $100 better off.
