I think James meant 01/02 EJ207 Short block.
ie. Then bolted on were standard 00 WRX Heads/Manifold/Wiring/
ECU.
If that is the case hunt around for a V5 Possumlink or Autronic SMC
ECU (both plug in) which will remove your Air Flow Meter in the 00 WRX.
James if you are running anything other than the standard airbox and dry paper Subaru panel filter please get a new
ECU before your AFM gets contaminated and possibly kills another engine.
The fuel smell is possibly your car running rich - ie your Piggyback Tune is out of whack due to a sensor malfunction and that most likely will be the 00 WRX AFM.
Easy and cheapest solution is to ring around any of the workshops listed to see if they have a good 00 WRX AFM lying around - bolt that in and see what happens - its a piss easy swap.
