I used to us hydrochloric acid when I was detailing in brissy. just don't let too much get on you and it will be fine.

Another trick that I have used to clean an exhaust is an oven cleaner product. - don't laugh this actually works. I had tar, burnt rubber, baked on grease and it all came off easily.
