yeah north is much safer but take it easy getting there, some of the coral bombies are only marked with floats so it is possible to go the wrong side and get into strife. Should be right with 50lb line, just play the drag by feel coz it changes with fish.
Not sure on snapper spots, i've always trawled out the back never bottom fished there. did catch a NW snapper on a deep diving rapala once though
personally i think trawlings the go.
The locals guard their good spots for red emperor/snapper pretty good. Try following a boat that looks like they know what they're dong and where they're going
