Encoding hammers your system resources regardless of format type, BRD is just extra greedy.
More encoding info to come.
Also remember, when looking at already encoded mkvs' the smaller size is mostly attributed to directors commentary being stripped 'this will almost split initial file size in half', removal of all other typical BRD features 'camera angles etc', removal of all extras, unneeded subtitles 'very minimal file size attributed here'.
Am I right in assuming that the mkvs' you're referring to have been down sampled to 720p? Not that this really makes a difference 'some say they can tell the difference, but I call bs unless its a shitty encode', as 1080p's, dependant on cropping/frame rate and audio source/biterate chosen will vary between 5 - 17gb 'obviously the 17gb would relate to long movies such as 'Dances with Wolves etc', averaging out at around 8-9gb.
