i've sent and received rims a couple of times ( using courier companies ) and none have needed to be boxed... but... the times i have sent and received they have been put on a pallet or skid so they don't roll around the truck and stay together.

drive around some industrial areas and you'll more than likely see some pallets/skids lying around that you might be able to have.
