The transfer case bearings fail regularly on those 2001 onwards 4.44 5 speeds. I would recomend you get someone who knows Subarus to inspect it and quote on rectifying the fault firstly. Full transfer case bearing repkacement would be under a grand, even less if you only change the noisy bearing.
