You want the lowest number you can afford.

The way I see the range:
1D - Pro
5D - Pro portraits
7D - Pro sports

Saying that, unless you want the whizz bang features of full frame or massive frame per second shooting a 60D is great.

Lenses - Get L series glass for the best photos. For walking around stuff I use a 18-200mm lens. Not the best photos, but they are pretty good.

But if you don't want quality and want practical, just get a point and shoot. I've taken better pictures on Georgie's Canon G10 than with shit lenses on a DSLR.
