I've had a fujitsu inverter split installed recently, the inside bit on high fan is much noisier than the compressor outside. They are remarkably quiet these days is seems. The compressor seems almost silent, and they use a big fan on low rpm to keep the sound down.
It's those old square bastards that you install in window sills retro style which are noisy, i can hear one about 40m away right now.
