I highly doubt its shaft play in the turbo, if there is enough play to hear a rattle, Then you turbo is completely stuffed this equals no turbo spool and a shit load of smoke, Might sound dumb but check there is nothing stuck in your shield, Give the exhuast a good bash, Hate to see you disassemble half a motor for nothing.
