I haven't been to Mao, and would go to him for work based on what I've seen in the forums. (again its 4 hrs to Perth for me) but Lane did a retune on my Ecutek for less than $300. I had issues with stalling at idle, Lane retuned and got rid of the stalling, and what sounded like a rotational idle, knock the boost back a bit from 22psi back to 20 (**s were reluctant to do) picked up a bit of extra Kw, torque was similar, also richened up the mix, as mine was running lean.
Also $1200 sounds like a new (ie not done before) tune, not a re-tune.
