Hmmm.. Under $1000 will be a bit tough.
Buy the quokka and and start searching. Should be able to find some old engine for >$1000 if your lucky.
Getting an old EJ and also getting it fitted at a workshop.. All for under $1000.. mmmmm no.
Most good Subaru workshops charge you about $100 an hour these days.
I won't even go into the breakdown of costs but yeah..
Best bet: Find an engine second hand that's in ok condition.
Find a mate whos done an engine swap in the past. Feed him beer and pizzas.. Then beg him to help you do the engine swap.
