My car is financed and a requirement of that is to be fully insured. Would kick my arse if I did have an accident and the insurance company decided not to pay out. Leaving me without a car and still in considerable debt....
Declare on the policy that modifications the car has, if they approve them it shouldn't be an issue.
That said, the insurer of my car doesn't requires a list of modifications, they just need a copy of the receipts (if the car is ever in a serious accident) and expect the modifications to meet ADR requirements.

If you have questions over whether or not something is legal/illegal/borderline, then take it to a workshop and ask for their opinion in the matter.
