XDA is without a doubt the best place to look at, they also have videos showing you what to do step by step (not for every phone/device unfortunately).
They have guides on how to root, unlock the bootloader, install a recovery program and new roms.
Just need to find the sub-forum for your phone and look at the guides/stickies.
