I think the rumbler is right. I didn't need to put my commodore over the pits for inspection when (after 5 years and deciding to sell it) I chose to register it in WA.
I would merely put it out there for your discretion to keep your car registered at your current interstate address (or my your parents or anywhere interstate for that matter). I kept my car registered with Vic plates on for 5 years and never received a multanova (speed camera) fine the whole time. Even after transferring reg to wa. Just something to ponder...
