Best time for it to show up is when your adding pressure to the system, and where it leaks out is where the air is getting in.

But the pedal should firm up after a few pumps, if not its a major, obvious leak and brake fluid will go some where as the pedal then slowly starts to sink.

NB it should be firm after you successfully bleed the brakes.
