Actually they're better than you think. You get reflection off cars in front of you when set up in a rear facing. It's not enough to save you if your driving substantially over the limit. As an example I get reasobnable notice before in traffic at the fixed Como reverse Setup on Kwinana. I'd never rely on it.
In the end, at least you know WHEN you pass one before getting the potential ticket in the mail when a reverse set up.
