This probably doesnt help you BEFORE you plug it in,

But for a GC8, an OBDII cable ($20 from ebay, search for VAG COM) and free software such as ECUExplorer will tell you the ID of your ECU.

I have a WRX GC8 and ECUExplorer reports "MY99/00 Impreza STI JDM"
