Yes, a resonator is an in line component added to the exhaust which will reduce certain sound frequencies in the exhaust note. A silencer typically slips in the end of the exhaust tip.
I do have a Canon muffler, is it possible just to exchange the tip only? And would this make it less restrictive? Any idea on approx cost?
You can change it out for a traditional style muffler, often referred to as an 'oval' muffler. These usually aren't as droney and loud as a cannon but still are decent for flow and sound - but anything that makes your car quieter will be more restrictive. Mufflers can be anywhere from $50 second hand to $500 + a couple hundred to install, but best to talk to an exhaust shop for a solid idea on pricing.
