For the most part, electricity is still generated by burning gas (and coal). But the industrial gas turbines at power stations are so much more efficient than even the best engines in vehicles today.

The other factor is power stations are generally not directly in the center of cities, where heavy pollution from vehicles is actually a health issue, not just an enviromental one. So shifting it out to the edges of cities or wherever the stations are, is better in that regard.

And with power generation, there is already alot of ground swell with moving to renewables. By 2040, renewable power will probably make up a larger portion of our power generation.
