I'm positive its because they can. I have an on-going stoush with Synergy - my mail goes to a PO Box but the supply address on my bill is wrong so I ring them to change it. A seemingly simple task.........

Them: we cant change it without you sending in 3 forms of proof about your address.
Me: Look on google maps, the address on my bill doesn't exist. I'm letting you know its wrong - get the meter checker to check next time.
Them: you might be trying to send the bill to somebody elses address and not pay it.
Me: it goes to my PO box? and if it didn't get paid, no electricity would be an issue for me.
Them: so send in 3 forms of proof.
Me: why should I? Im helping you correct YOUR mistake. OK then, can you please send my bill to the supply address instead of my PO Box. That way when it get returned you can call me and this address problem can be sorted.
Them: No, I cant do that - you've told me the address doesn't exist.
*face palm*
Me: well thats why I have rung you, why dont you go ahead and change it?
Them: send in 3 forms of proof.
Me: well get fucked then, leave the adress as it is wrong then. The next person to buy the house can deal with you twits.

I ventured into a Post Office for the first time in a while on Monday afternoon. 40 minute line, and had to put up with some guy in a wheelchair and a bad attitude spew a hateful tirade after some rude African lady in a burqa "barged past him" with no manners. That was fairly lol though.
