Ashley Westwood Photography and The Garage Journal

Well, before this year's Targa West, Ashley Westwood (Ashley Westwood Photography) replied to a sponsorship proposal I had emailed. I agreed to carry his logos on my rally car in return for photos and some video of us in the event. After many emails back and forth, his partner, Patrick Stirling with whom Ashley (allegedly) runs a business called "The Garage Journal" (The Garage Journal) provided me their logos which we ran on the car for the event.

So, come Targa West, no sign or contact from Ashley Westwood, no sign of him during the event and no contact after. Also emails I sent to them after the event enquiring where my photos etc were have goine unanswered.

It seems to me that there was no intention by them to honour our deal. I know that Ashley occasionally frequents local events like the McRae Rallysprints and MC Sprint Championship....my advice is to avoid any deals with these guys.

thank you for having the balls to name and shame.

this is needed more often

Yep...as far as I'm concerned an agreement is an agreement...and they have had over 4 weeks to reply to me...but nothing!

Bram 23-09-2015 09:45 AM

good on you for reporting this. they have benifited by having your car belt around showing off thier logo, and got nothing in return. only fair that you get online and bag them out.

Cool, wedding season coming up, time inundate him with a few fake ones.

Hate seeing photographers giving the trade a bad name.

post up his photos using your own watermark
he'll come knocking soon enough

mlafoz 15-10-2015 07:37 PM

No offence but having a logo on a car that's going ridiculously fast isn't really worth doing photos and videos for. Doesn't bring any traffic back to a photographer or any future work. Totally understand if you have agreed over emails with what each other is getting but to name and shame is going pretty far, especially the garage journal. I've taken a screen shot of this and sent it to ashley for ya tho.

astralex 15-10-2015 09:29 PM

Whether it's 'worth doing' in your opinion isn't the point. If a deal was brokered and not upheld, then this thread is entirely valid in my views.

Slap Dash 15-10-2015 09:30 PM

^ I think if an agreement has been made & by the sounds of it Nauli has gone above & beyond to get in contact after following his end of the deal.. More than fair to name & shame.. Too much political correctness & more name & shaming needs to occur not just in this scenario but other scenario's too these days.

I also do Automotive photography work myself & it just shits over other photographers that try & do the right thing when this kind of shit occurs.

astralex 15-10-2015 09:35 PM

Totally agree with Slapper. If a deal was brokered and isn't being upheld by one party, then they should be singled out from the rest of the industry, as opposed to simply tarring them all together.

You don't seem to understand how sponsorship and advertising works...

Like Astralex says it was all agreed up front just like any sponsorship is...they were sent my sponsorship booklet, so it wasn't just a "backroom deal" done via email or sms. My other sponsors ...John Fowler Autosport and J&W Zarb Car Craft...all fulfilled our agreements as professionals do.
And the car did get some static coverage from the event broadcaster.
At the end of the day A Westwood Photography & Garage Journal made an agreement and renegged on it....no ifs or buts...simple as that.

why dont you give his cock a good going over while you're at it.

Fozzy_Mat 21-10-2015 10:13 AM

What were you driving in Targa West? I was on road closures and on occasion had a chance to get the camera out and capture some of the goings on.
I would happily give you full size copies of any shots i might have. I dont do it for money just a bit of fun.
Given you have been effectively ripped off by a member of the car community it is the least i could do to try and maintain the balance in the force.

Mcclacker 21-10-2015 06:34 PM

I 've had a completely different experience to Nauli as on the Sunday at the show and shine they came to me asking if they could publish pics/specs of my rothmans escort in the next publication I agreed as its a good excuse to get the old girl out so time/location was arranged. From the initial contact it was known I wouldn't get any money out of it but they were happy to share the pictures and video, which to be fair they have and i could not fault them on their communication/timing. Whether the feature will be any good or not I'm not fussed as taking the car for a drive in the state forest was good enough :-)

RichX 21-10-2015 07:44 PM

This is all I could find. Appears they were at the event?

Interesting...they didn't contact me at all...even after numerous emails...From the post it looks like a "Michele Seymour" took the photo....no idea who that is.....it's a good photo though....and shows their logo up very well!

It's good to hear that at least you had success with them John...like your "offer" mine didn't involve any money, just a photo/video package which seems to have evaporated somehow in the ether...

Did you end up getting photos from another source?

No I didn't Tim....I guess there have been other issues on my mind post QTW!
But I am particularly keen to get one of Chris Richmond's photos from Whiteman Park of the car over the speed hump with all 4 wheels off the ground....

Ah that was you. I have some pictures while you still had all the bits on your car. Great effort by the way just soldiering on after the spin. I was on the corner at the entry gate to Barbs and thought you were heading for the ditch, nice save.

Anyway if you want any of these in super duper high res let me know and i will send them through when i am on my home PC.

Sorry i dont have more i spent the rest of the weekend telling somewhat dimwitted people to not walk on the active race course. I will however check all the files when i get home as i might have a couple more in the full batch of pictures.

nauli 28-10-2015 01:31 PM

Yes would like a copy of the first two, but would appreciate if you remove the last three from your post!

TROLLEY 28-10-2015 01:48 PM

Shit, do drivers really get upset at photos of their offs?! You are human...

Bram 28-10-2015 01:55 PM

probably to protect the sponsors.

nauli 28-10-2015 02:10 PM
