Its got nothing to do with being uncool, its about blinding other road users. You WILL get better performance out of a good halogen bulb in your halogen housing.
I take your post deeply into consideration. The first night i took the car out after installing i thought these aren't that good, and i got high beamed twice.

After thought for the next day, waited til the next night, lined my missus satria gti up ( slightly the same height) and my impreza up, and set mine exactly the same, to the same side throwing out as well. Since then i have had no high beaming, and have had it passed when pulled over for a "random car inspection".

What halogen globes do you recommend ? i am all keen for trying anything, i do a bit of highway driving ( missus parents live in Busselton, we drive home by the highway when we come home from bunbury to our house), and i have found the HIDS are great for sign lightage and seeing on the sides, they pick up pieces of glass and eyes on the side of the road quite well.

TopGear 30-08-2008 06:25 PM

yeah mine seem fine, I look in peoples rear view mirror when coming up behind them and it doesnt seem to shine in there mirror, also I get blinded by the cars that have HIDs stock so I dont really see the problem lol.

NVRENUF 30-08-2008 06:28 PM

yeah i see stock 4wheel drives with hids and they are blinding

i figure as long as you adjust them to the right hight as they dont blind people should be ok.

agentorange 30-08-2008 09:17 PM

Hey Will did you just put hid globes in the standard sti ballasts? Or did you upgrade the whole lot?

NVRENUF 31-08-2008 08:14 PM

globes plug right into the stock sti housing.

agentorange 01-09-2008 05:22 PM
globes plug right into the stock sti housing.
Will they be projected correctly, or will the light scatter?

NVRENUF 01-09-2008 05:49 PM

light will scatter to some degree. Becuase houseing isnt designed for it
SAying that make sure the level is down out of peoples eyes and i havnt seen a drama

Bakks 01-09-2008 06:10 PM

02 STi has projector headlights so not a problem.

6050king 08-09-2008 06:06 PM

So you can just buy the bulbs and they screw straight into a 02?

NVRENUF 08-09-2008 06:52 PM

Yeah mate Bugeye should be a H4 from memory.

But you need ballest the whole kit but yes plug and play.

6050king 08-09-2008 08:39 PM

Cheers mate. can't wait to get ride of the yellow beam.

RichX 02-04-2009 03:05 PM

If i suspect a ballast is on the way out, Can i replace the ballast with a different one? Or change them both to different ones without having to swap out the globes at the same time?

NVRENUF 02-04-2009 03:08 PM

Yeah mate should do, I have couple Ballasts by them selfs at home.
Very strange that they would be going out though,

However if the plugs are the same as the kits i have then should be fine to plug them in.

kennny 02-04-2009 03:42 PM

off topic but i have installed HID on MY02 sti but how do i lower the beam level?

RichX 02-04-2009 03:50 PM
Yeah mate should do, I have couple Ballasts by them selfs at home.

Yeah it is weird i know ..

When my headsligts are on when i start the car, they warm up and come on alright, however when i begin to start the car, the HID lamp on the left flickers, sometimes manages to stay on, othertimes it doesn't ignite and i have to turn them off/on again for them both to be on.

What do you think.

saturation 02-04-2009 04:44 PM

depends on the ballast, some kits come with ballasts and igniters others come built in, just make sure you get the same type and you should be ok.

As a rule of thumb i only ever turn the HID's on after car has started. HID's pull a massive amount of volts to initially turn on.

RichX 02-04-2009 04:53 PM

Yeah, i am now following the same tactic. Do you think that extended use of doing it the other way would cause damage to battery/alternator?

Jezza 02-04-2009 05:08 PM

i'm a bit of a noob when it comes to lights - wasnt quite sure what HID's were and how they differ... also what projector lights are and how they are different...

Here's some info I've found on Wikipedia and summarised for other noobs:

Lens optics The collection of light reflected from the back of the light is dispersed/refracted by the specially designed glass lens.

Reflector optics The back 'reflector' of the headlamp is specifically designed to reflect the light from the bulb, and the front 'cover' of the lamp is only for protection.

Projector Lamps The light is reflected into the refractive lens at the middle of the light, where there is a solenoid that limits the dispersion of the light out of the lens.

To achieve a low & high beam, the reflector & lens optics have 2 light filaments in different positions, with the hi-beam filament being at the 'focal point' - where the light produced will be most concentrated and disperse most.
The projector lamps simply have a solenoid that moves/tilts the refractive lens to change the direction of the light produced.

If anyone wishes to read more: Wiki

OK :p now, I'm guessing that all GD's have projector lamps, and GC's have reflector optics?

Now onto HID's HID stands for high-intensity discharge, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Advantages of having this type of light over the standard filaments:
Longer life, better efficiancy and output, increased safety
Disadvantages: Cost $$$ and...
Glare - Vehicles equipped with HID headlamps are required to also to be equipped with headlamp lens cleaning systems and automatic beam levelling control. Both of these measures are intended to reduce the tendency for high-output headlamps to cause high levels of glare to other road users.
8000k HID's in non-projector headlamps? I hope I never have to drive near you at night!
Sooooo, technically if you have brighter HID bulbs & ballasts in a car without 'beam leveling control'/projector lamps, then it's illegal as it blinds other road users, as the light dispersion is not controlled. Fair enough you can adjust them, but take into account having different weight in the car, going over bumps, up hills, yada yada yada.

Safest bet would be leaving your lights stock unless you have projectors, and if you have a GC8, get some 'angel eye' lights if you wish to go HID. Just cos HID lights have more visibility, they arent any safer when fitted in non-projectors as it will give oncoming traffic reduced visibility (that may cause an accident).

Please correct me if I'm wrong with any of the info above, but I thought I'd share my new knowledge with others ;)

RichX 02-04-2009 05:13 PM

02 STi's had projectors, but no HID.

I have out HID's in mine, and while the light is absolutely awesome, i know it would be beneficial for other road users (aka, the ones in front of me) if i had levellers.

masTers 02-04-2009 05:24 PM

Tim you got any hids left to suit a my03 wrx?

Jezza 03-07-2009 12:24 AM

thread bump...

wanting some advice from people who have had HIDs on their GC8's... does it require a beam-leveling system or anything to not blind other cars etc? and do they work ok in the non-projector headlights of the GCs?

i was considering getting a 6000k kit, any opinions on this?

last question.... as hid's dont have 2 filaments or whatever, are they still capable of high beam etc, and how good is the high beam on hids?

cheers

NVRENUF 03-07-2009 06:49 AM

No they dont need the leveling system, Just adjust them when installed to sit at a good level not to blind people.

They are compatable with GC8 how ever they are designed for projector.

in halogen i would rekomend 4300k and 6000 is slightly more blue,
but that is up to u.

now for your high and low yes, for cars like yours with high and low beam in one globe i use the Dual beam kits. Does hi and low beam like normal so nothing will change.

except be able to see a lot more at night now haha.

the actuall light doesntr change its a cover over the light which moves which then changes the light from looking down to up for high beam. so they are great
once you drive with HID you will never want to use shit halogen again.

WRXTASY 13-07-2009 01:49 PM

Colonel, to get projectors into your GC8 headlights your will need a kit like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250459902396&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX_Stores&refitem=310149113826&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&refwidgettype=osi_widget&_trksid=p284.m185&_trkparms=algo%3DSI%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D4%26ps%3D42

The DIY and pics after install here:
http://www.rexnet.com.au/forum/index.php?showtopic=105668

Points to note with this kit:
-Bi-xenon projector lens light, it is a new model auto headlight which combine the oval reflector with convex imaging theory,
-The Hi Beam/Low Beam is electromagnetic switched.
-Clear cut line with the legal excellent light shape, the light is soft to the vehicle and passerby
-The middle of the High light shadow has a focusing block, making driver vision brighter.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GC8's need the H4 bulb type.
two 35w ballast need to be purchased separately.

:)

Jezza 13-07-2009 02:05 PM

so even with a lamp such as this retrofitted

the lights will still take the same H4 bulbs?

WRXTASY 13-07-2009 02:27 PM

Looking at the DIY thread you use the H4(D2S) Hi/Lo Bulbs that come with the kit. They are inserted inside the projectors you have pictured above.

Ultra Slim Line Ballast are about $40ea. shipped.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=330343590610

Might be easier to get the whole kit shipped (including slimline ballasts) for $280ish
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/H4-9003-Bi-xenon-projector-HID-CONVERSION-Kit-Hi-Lo-New_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ65Q3a1Q7c66Q3a2Q7c39Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem1e5778c7a7QQitemZ130316552103QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ebayphotohosting

I'm keen for the whole kit. They also provide discounts for combined shipping. :)

hi guys.

sorry to bump such and old thread but i thought it might be better than starting a new one.

anyway i've been toying with the idea of putting aftermarket headlight units into my peanut so i can use HID projectors.

came across this unit on eBay from the USA

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290416136707&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

wondering if anyone knows anything about this and how compatible it would be with our cars here in Aus.

cheers!

Alternate 25-03-2010 01:09 AM

Also while this thread has resurfaced. has anyone fitted projectors to a GC8 and is it legal? I saw one tutorial which required cutting out part of the reflector so i would have thought that would earn a yellow

RichX 25-03-2010 08:47 AM

There was a website i saw ages ago in which some guy retrofitted projectors into the GC8 style headlights. Looked like an expensive operation, but could be worthwhile.

Is it pretty rare for the ballasts to die? My RHS headlamp sometimes comes on, but flickers a lot. I think i might try bulbs first.

02 STI Projectors are H1 for HID, yep?

Chum 28-06-2011 12:25 PM

Bump, one of my HID bulbs (h4 4300k) blew last night and I need a new one. Is there any places around perth that sell them? Do not really want to get ebay ones in a week or two.

Mister Two 28-06-2011 12:26 PM

Call Rob @ Volatile Customs in morley.

Chum 28-06-2011 07:54 PM

Thankyou, got a new set of ballists from him after some evo/wrx talk. Too easy.
