Question powder coating chrome??

If I wanted to powder coat chrome rims to maybe Black or Gunmetal Grey is this possible? and if so where can this be done.. or can it be a DIY?

The only response I've had on a search is powdercoating rims TO chrome not ON chrome.

thanks

the powdercoating process reaches very high temps and i dont think you'd get a good enough bond

pretty sure you would need to get the chrome plating removed first by blasting or whatever then you'd have a clean prepped surface to powdercoat

are they just tempe specials?
maybe better to sell up to a ricer and buy some proper rims

Yes it can be done. You would be blasting off the chrome first, then applying the powder coat.

It's not a DIY as you need the painting equipment and baking oven to powder coat.

Most chrome rims are crap, heavy ass and unsuitable for a WRX though... So you would be better off starting with another, lighter rim imo.

Is there a reason you want it powder coated & not just painted?

well if there is a different way, I'm open to options, just thought it'd give it a better finish.

I'm not sure what the difference is. But I have had some rims painted before & they came out great.
I just went to a spray painter for it. I don't know if you need a different process if the rims are chrome though.
I imagine the powder coating would be heavier. But don't quote me on that.

Either way, with chrome rims, you will not get a good result..

As Kato said, start fresh, as your chromies will probably be better used as boat anchors..

You can pick up light weight rims with tyres for $1500 in 18s these days, so I would go that option. Make sure you get some decent offset tho, so you fill those guards!
