Default Painting Rims Without Ech-Priming

Greetings,

Basically want to just throw some tyre black over my rims to see if I want to bo more permanent, and don't want the hassle of having to cut back etc 'pretty much comes off when wiped with thinners'.

If I just thoroughly clean and ensure they have been prep'd well, will I have any problems with pain flaking off when the car is in motion?

Tyre black will be commercial grade, and sprayed on via gravity feeder, not aerosol 'pretty much same paint used to spray wheel arches with etc'.

Cheers,

Should be ok just make sure you put light coats of paint. If you put it on too thick, that's when you will have problems with the paint flaking off! With black 2-3 light coats should be fine.

If the wheels are already painted/laquored just scrub them back with the scotchbrite pads auto paint shops sell, if you're going back to bare alloy I'd buy a can of etch primer, you can use it as the primer as it's grey, just run the scotchbrite pad over it lightly before applying the base coat/colour

I would suggest this if you were looking for something permanent.

I blackened out my FMiC today and not all that fond of it, it seems that the aluminium colour really added a contrast to the front end, but I've used tyre black for this specific purpose so I can just put some thinners into a gravity feeder and wash it off.

To get an idea mate, check out damo's ride, and suck up for a side on pick, as this is what it would look like done properly.

You'd also be able to gauge it better as its been clear coated 'or what ever the powder coated version of clear coating is 'sealed?'.

Totally agree with you pimpreza, but after doing the FMiC I've decided against blackening the rims 'in this case it was only going to be a test go', deciding that if I'm actually going to properly paint them to do it white so it adds some contrast.

Go white, so much better looking, you may as well have steelies in black from any more than 30m.
