where to get random orbital sander cutting/polishing pads

Hi guys,

I am attempting to do some swirl removal on my car and have been reading up on guides and getting a bit of info.

I have purchased this random orbital sander but I cant seem to find any pads for it:

I am after the velcro-type fastening pads. All the cutting and polishing pads out there have a thread attachment for a polisher.

Any help would be much appreciated (including if I have bought the wrong tool).

Cheers,
Shane.

uhh thats a sander, you want a buffer! Unless your attempt to remove the swirl = remove paint to bare metal :)

There's multiple sellers there Shane.

Never seen any buff pads to suit a sander that small but that doesn't mean they don't exist. What rpm does that sander do? I am guessing it would most likely be too fast to use for buffing anyway.

Hmm I think I have got the wrong machine. I have seen them used but they are usually built for car detailing and not random use like this one (though I have seen the PEX-400 used for swirl removal...so im a little confused).

**edit**

That site Andrew gave me does have some buffing pads + backing plates for ro machines. Will keep searching.

Variable speed RO sander is ok for polishing. As with any machine polishing, keep speed around half-way and don't push down hard on it or keep it in one spot for extended periods.

If you don't mind buying from overseas, try autogeek.net

I have a PEX-270AE, it works fantastic, Waxit - Premium Car Care Australia sells 6" Edge pads with velcro back for the PEX. That's where I get all of mine from

EDIT: here are the ones I use:

So? It spins and is a great unit to start learning how to polish, you do less damage with an orbital than a rotary as it doesn't heat the paint up as much.

Random orbital sander/buffer...same/same... abrasive pad for sanding, foam buffing pad for polishing.
Do no more than about 1 metre sq at a time and finish each section off with a quality microfibre hand polishing cloth as you go. A good r/o machine used correctly will give a finish completely devoid of swirls.
You will be a bit nervous to start with but once you get the hang of it you can do a whole car in no time...

Most auto spares shops stock buffing pads....eg Auto One who also sell AutoGlym products.

Thanks Huggy, Dan and Nauli, I appreciate it a lot. I will look into those pads and see how we go.
