Diy boot install

hey guys,

decided as I'm poor and can't afford to have some one make one for me i would create my own boot install and leave regular posts for any one interested in building one themselves as it can be quiet intimidating to do.

this is my first attempt so any help appreciated any info would be great.

the install will include:

*1 pioneer champion sub
*1 alpine MRP 1000 mono block
*1 alpine MRF 600 4 channel amp.

the boot install is going to be relevant to any gd shaped boot and will leave access to the spare wheel. it will also leave a stock look well as much as a visible sub in the boot with two amps can look stock.

there will be a full mdf flooring in the boot and the sub will be situated at the back of the boot up against the rear seat with both amps visible through appropriate sized slots on angles either side of the sub.

this will be left flush.

one thing i do need to know is should the mdf floor have sound deadening under it or on top of it I'm assuming under it??

step 1
go to bunnings buy lots of mdf and screws and take them home : D

step 2
mark out flooring shape on mdf

i used the boot carpet as a guide for tracing out the flooring but some adjustments were made i used four individual pieces of mdf rather then two i felt it would make it easier to put together and work with.

will post up as i go only spent about 2 hrs on it today but will do more asap.

any questions or tips appreciated

Hey mate, same situation as me, im currantly not running a spare wheel as my sub box is to large for my boot so what im doing is making a false flooe 190mms above the original with a trap door for the spare wheel, iv got the amp under drivers seat with bass controller screwed into the side of my console( fairly well hiden) and iv got 2 12" pioneers for in the boot. Will be good to see photos of ur final product.

TROLLEY 16-03-2012 09:42 AM

Nice thread, but you need a better camera.

huggy_b 16-03-2012 10:20 AM

I wanted to keep most of my boot space and have a little doof doof thats looks reasonably factory, so I bought a pre-fabbed f/g enclosure that sits in the side of the boot rather than up against the back seats. Tried to get one made here locally, but for the price it was cheaper to get one flown in from the US. Only holds a 10" and is ~1cuft, but its loud enough for an old timer like me - the days of having no boot space with 3 x 12" and 3000WRMS running them are well in my past! Highly recommend these products, mine fit like a glove.

Excuse the mess, I had to take some rockwool boards to my workers on site.

tris7an 16-03-2012 12:19 PM

Yeah I wanted to get two for the corners of the boot but still four times the cost of building one so I'm going to give it a crack ; )

Only have my iPhone as acamera so apologies ; )

I will also have a trap door for my spare wheel working on that today will post progress as soon as there is some lol

Thanks guys bring on the helpful info. If you have any and even the unhelpful could be interesting : D

You iPhone needs to be upgraded because the picture quality looks like you've owned it since 1999.....
Its called focus :)

that looks really neat, only reason i didnt get these because i have a pram that fits perfectly in these position when me and the missus take my car out

TROLLEY 16-03-2012 03:55 PM

I love those enclosures too and almost got one for the betty but I couldn't bring myself to move from a 12" sub.

Dont reckon it will be that hard to cut out for a 12inch subwoofer.

thebish 16-03-2012 05:49 PM

required volume will change though I suppose
Dont reckon it will be that hard to cut out for a 12inch subwoofer.
As bish suggested... far too small a volume to put my current sub in. Also lack of depth/clearance.

huggy_b 16-03-2012 06:43 PM

My baby 10" goes alright. :)

tris7an 17-03-2012 03:14 PM

step 3

okay a little progress today.

spent three hours on the box before i go ahead finishing the false floor : D
as i need to be sure it fits in the boot with the floor height before the floor gets bolted down.

step 3

you will need either a jigsaw or a drop saw(preferred) i used a jigsaw

cut out the pieces you require if its for a gd wrx your measurements will be the same as mine i will post these later.

depending on the size of sub you use the litre-age will be different for you're box so keep this in mind i decided to go un ported for now but may consider it later thats completely up to you.

you will need.

*jigsaw/ drop saw
*silicone i used sika - flex
*screws i went with mdf chipboard 45mm long x 50
*of course MDF i used three sheets 450mm wide by 1200 long x 18 (22 would be best) lots left over
*i also used glue in every hole a screw went in i used a proper sealant as i know my sub pumps hard.
* straight edge of some sort
*tape measure
*marking pen

will post up measurements later tonight

this is just the box for the sub it is not a final product this won't even be seen once i am finished so it isn't the best looking and is covered in glue as its not important what it looks like its more important what it sounds like.

finished box will test sound later if its shit ill try again : )

tommo 17-03-2012 03:26 PM

how is this going to sit in your boot? in the spare wheel well?

Brett Allan 17-03-2012 03:33 PM

put some speaker foam in there, and maybe carpet the box for cosmetic appeal?

Spence 17-03-2012 04:50 PM

Oh your only running one 12" I thought you were running two my mistake, I'm on my way to bunnings now to get my mdf. Are u puttin this box in the spear wheel arch or towards the back seat??

ImPreSiV 17-03-2012 05:20 PM
put some speaker foam in there, and maybe carpet the box for cosmetic appeal?
I dare say he's not finished....

tris7an 17-03-2012 06:15 PM

no where near finished the box will sit against the back seat and two amps will sit along side it there will be a fancy cover piece to go over all of this you will only see black carpet or possibly blue carpet haven't decided and all you'll see is a sub and two amps : D

will be putting foam in later box was necessary to make sure i didn't make the false floor to high
thanks impresiv your on to it ; )

also any one know if i should deaden on top of the mdf floor or on the boot floor I'm assuming boot floor but worried ill waste time and money doing that part wrong lol

also people sub box sounds amazing needs a little more sealant as i was in a hurry but wanted to try it any way.

will work more in this in a few days and post more as i can next step is the amp racks : D

thanks for following hope I'm being helpful

Spence 17-03-2012 06:43 PM

In my last box I made, I never used the foam in the box and it sounds alot better the the one I done with foam.

tris7an 18-03-2012 03:26 AM

so here are the measurements i used if anyone is interested bare in mind this is the size i used due to height restrictions as the false floor takes up a fair bit of height : D

also this is still not finished peeps hold on a bit longer its close ; )

Spence 18-03-2012 10:08 AM

How high do u have ur floor? Up to the top of the beaver panel??

tris7an 18-03-2012 12:59 PM

Haha you said beaver : o

Ahum back on track......... I have no idea what a beaver panel is but if your refereeing to the raised metal in the boot near the rear seat then yes I put the floor about 4-5mm above that and leveled everything out floor isn't bolted in yet as I need to find out why to sound deaden floor or boot ??? Any one??? And trap door for my spare is going to be made soon but hopefully tonight I'll have one amp rack done ; ) will post up specs after I finish work

If any one has creative ideas or is keen to help out lemme know

I know sound but this fabrication stuff is tricky lol : s

Spence 18-03-2012 01:16 PM

HA HA, "the Beaver panel isnt near the rear seat its the panel that your bumper sits flush to and also its home to your boot catch. sorry panel beater lingo.

oh so its only bout 100mm of the original floor?

mines about the same. instead of making a box for the subs im making a back wall.'this will bolt to the rear parcel shelf sub frame and then screw into my floor so the rear of the boot is "somewhat sealed". iv got the trap door made already. photos in my album if you wont to have a quick look. '

and yes anyone want to help with the sound deadening??

tris7an 18-03-2012 02:05 PM

Your false floor kills mine haha I may ask you to help me out with that part lol if your keen

Looking good man feel free to post the pics up here if you want and people take note spence has done a false floor and looks the goods ; ) also how did you bolt it down I was just going to smash it with lots of screws lol

ausyve 18-03-2012 02:15 PM

Great thread. Now you guys got me thinking. I have 2 x 12 type R's in a box that takes up the whole boot space. The box has been reinforced with fibreglass for that extra strength, but I'm sure it's a bit of an overkill. Might start measuring up my boot.
Keep the pics coming.

TROLLEY 18-03-2012 02:46 PM

Did you make a box that just fits and is of a random dimension and volume, or did you use software to tell you what would suit the specs of your driver??

I'm assuming that given the size of this box that you will need to remove it from the boot first to gain access to the trap door? If so, how are you going to secure it?

tris7an 18-03-2012 03:03 PM

Trap door will be accessible with out moving the box the box will be situated to the rear of the boot there will be three boxes or rather 1 box and two amp racks all will be revealed in time I will draw a quick design on illustrator tonight to give people the concept as no one sees my vision haha.

The amp racks and sub will be against the rear seat with just enough room for the trapdoor to be accessed the three boxes will be bolted to each other and to the false floor which will bolt to the boot ; )

This will all be covered with a false wall showing only the sub and two amps this will be black carpet and I will make up some pretty looking framework for the amps and sub and that will be flocked blue to match my interior ; )

Hope that helps.

And there is soft ware for sub making I spent a lot of time at SAE Perth doing my bachelor of audio so did the maybe myself but in the end I had to compromise some of the boxes shape for the amount of space left as the false floor took up room.

im not able to just "screw" mine down, what i making at this time is "Walls" they will be joined at the underside of the floor. so each different cut of mdf will have its own room(if that makes sense). i will upload photos when i completely install it too my boot.

ausyve - i have two 12'' pioneers i had bout 1/2 a foot of space with them in the box now i will have bout 4.5 foot of room so i'm happy as larry.

TOP THREAD: both installs should look amazing when you finish them :D...

SADLY... this thread has inspired my mate to go and 'attempt' to do the very same. Go all DIY on his install... which will lead to his swift hospitalisation (i am almost certain).

Yeah, well I told him there will be no blood on the leather of my car.

If i gave him no tools he would be at his most dangerous! using himself or others (as willing participants or unsuspecting victims) to break the wook into peices... and to be honest it is easier to explain that he cut himself to the Doctor then explain that he beat and old lady with a sheet of wood to the police :)

Sorry for the off topic..

Huggy I like that setup with the sub in that corner, can you access the jack?

Spence 18-03-2012 06:09 PM

yeah im going to use some sort of lock(gatelock) to hold it level.

Dan [GTI] 18-03-2012 06:17 PM

NICE, although it could be hard to find some that are flat/fluch...
Maybe just mount it right up against the bootlip area so its less noticable?

What have you got in mind?

EDIT: ALSO, my friend didn't he got a splinter and gave up, true story.

If that is the worst that happens to him :)

He is an auto electrician and hasn't burnt himself/shocked himself YET... but 15seconds into his house and BAM, SMASH accident in progress :)
