I assume he wants to keep his navigation? What sort of budget gear?
If he is going to keep the stock head unit I'd recommend going to the expense of an audio processor. After buying one myself and also auditioning what one can do with even just stock components... wow.

I don't see a reason to keep the stock head unit then. It's terrible, and personally I'd keep the stock speakers over Type-R splits but that's just my ears. The stock speakers are actually quite decent once amplified.
I have a Alpine deck and a neat little pocket underneath the it that fills in the space left. I can take a photo to show your friend if you like. Head units are cheap as shit these days and are just so flexible in regards to your various sources - CD/usb/iPod/Bluetooth, etc. Installation will obviously be so much more simple and your sound quality will be better (depending on what deck you purchase obviously).

Quite a few aftermarket amplifiers have high level inputs, I see you mentioned Alpine components, the X-Power line of amplifiers all have high level input. As mentioned by other people, don't use one of those Aerpro line converters, there are better quality converters.

Nothing wrong with the factory head unit, and if he wants to keep all the Bluetooth and steering controls, then it's understandable he wants to keep it. I am going to be looking in to this in the future too Dan. So practice up
