I'm on a mac and i use a program called Handbrake. Fairly easy to use for someone that has no idea how to do such things.

Not sure if they have it on windows, but if they do, give it a go!

Yeah I use a number of products, Handbrake for the PC is one, nice and simple. The encoding does seem to take longer than some of the other apps, but it's free! Also you will need something like AnyDvd to make sure you can get past the DVD encryption. Why do you want it in avi format by the way? Is it just to play on your PC?

I'm guessing it would be so he could save drivespace as a good DVDrip will compress to .avi to 1/10th or thereabouts of DVD size & at near DVD quality?

In the past I've tried a few DVD->AVI progs but none seem anywhere near the quality of the ones like ya can get on P2P.

Does the freebie mentioned above do good res video files which are passable @ fullscreen?
