I like the nfs games, as cheesy as they are.
I find them far more entertaining than the gran tursimo games, as they compensate for my shit gaming ability and allow me crash in to a wall at high speed without impeding my track position. |

Got both games on the same day last week, took the day off work... for evaluation purposes.
Dirt2 has nice graphics but the game overall is just that, a game. Very much an arcade platform designed to get more North American hooked (I want to punch Ken Block), Saying that it doesn't take anything away from the driving aspect. It's still challenging and the physics are as real as you'd expect from a game. My biggest qualm with it is the Pyramid type progression that has become hallmark with the Colin McRae games in the last few installments. This gamer prefers a whole championship in one discipline straight out of the box. So sorry gents (and ladies) no whole rally championship to contest till later. Also the hill climb which was so popular in the first installment of Dirt has been replace with something called Raid, Which in effect is hill-climb cars on the same stages as the rally aspect of the game but without the benefit of a co-driver calling notes for you. Although fun to play I found Dirt2 to be lacking some soul and therefore it would be hard to get immersed in it for hours. I give it a 6 and a half out of 10. Shift on the other hand also has a Pyramid type of progression however the driving is more simulated which is a departure from the normal arcade style we have come to know the Need for Speed moniker to entail. Although the physics by no means replicate that of Gran Turismo Prologue, it's assortment of cars do all subtly behave different and even more so once modded. Personally I find this type of play more user friendly. One of the things that I have found disappointing are the graphics. Yes the game is packed with a decent amount of tracks and cars but it does become a let down in the visuals compared to what we have come to expect from a modern game. Career mode is more inviting and less arduous then the caravan set up that is featured as the home screen of Dirt2. For me the greatest coup is the return of Nordeschleife to a mainstream game. Although not as aesthetic as Dirt2 I did find Shift more engrossing which isn't bad since I've always been more of a rally fan than circuit. I give Shift 7 out of 10. Test rig was a PS3 on lcd projector with cobra race bucket and G25 wheel and pedals. Last edited by Autopilot; 23-09-2009 at 10:26 PM. |

I am yet to play a racer more 'real' than Live for Speed, have you tried that auto? Its pc only but does not require a serious beast. You can only buy it online as well. However its only $45 for S2. It supports the full features of the g25 wheel as well.

Built it, only took an hour to zap it up plus paint. I really couldn't play drivers any other way now.
