As the title says, after doing the latest firmware update, my PS3 won't read blueray discs or games.
Anyone else had this issue?
I've spoken to Sony, they say its nothing to do with the update and they will fix it for a fee ($175).
What do you think? Sounds like a hardware issue, but it was fine till the update.

Unsure of consoles but are you able to do a system restore and check?

It is not possible to go back to a previous firmware version, but it is possible to attempt to repair any bad sectors on the HDD, I tried this twice, and it still comes up with same message saying the data is corrupted.
Bloody Sony, they force you to do updates or you can't log onto the PS network, then this happens.
Massive problem in the U.S. from what I've read on the official PS forum over there.
It will play normal DVD's, and games downloaded online, just not blueray or games.

you can buy a new ps3 for $255 now days
No way would i pay $175 to fix an old one..

but what fuckers.. Of course it was their update why else would it just stop


when did this update come out i havnt turned mine on for a day

It was in December, version 4.0, just check your system information and it will tell you what is in yours

That's bullshit, it's a widespread problem and well documented on the net. I'd be gathering a few URL's and references from various ps3 based forums and get in touch with someone via email, pointing out to them that your situation is not a one off, nor is it a coincidental hardware failure.

I would remind their tech support that firmware enables hardware to communicate with eachother and that your hardware was running perfectly before any software changes.

im not sure if mine got updated before it couldn't read the discs but mine was recently playing up as well. Apparently it was some laser head that needed replacing...and that costed $160
