Hard Drive Issue
Hey y'all...
Got an issue with an internal storage drive... doesn't come up in My Computer, yet does come up in Disk Management but only as a 4gb drive on E... it's a Samsung 1.5TB drive; been right thru the BIOS and all reports ok except for reported capacity... fortunately it's just a backup drive for the D drive. Do ya reckon it's FUBAR ? Tried to re-initialise but comes up with an I/O device error... can't even re-format coz the option is greyed out or doesn't exist depending on my method of access. Any ideas?

Sounds like the Master Boot Record (MBR) has been corrupted.
Will need to rebuild the MBR to resolve this, have fixed this with limited success in the past. Hirens boot CD is a great tool that allows you to fix this and many other problems.

I wouldnt trust it even if you do get it going. If its fallen over once it is more likely to do it again.
From my personal experience I've had shit luck with Samsung drives, I've even had an RMA replacement fail ffs. Seagate have been good to me. |

If you don't need the files on there do the following.
Run diskpart.exe type: 'list disk' 'select disk 0' (from the list select the correct drive - make sure you dont stuff this but up) 'clean' 'convert GPT' You can use diskpart to create the new drive but I would just go to disk management and create a new partition. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb490893.aspx - info on diskpart.exe Last edited by zver333; 20-01-2014 at 08:18 PM. Thanks for the info guys... it seems no matter what I do, whether to format, diskpart, chkdsk etc; whether from Windows UI or cmd.exe, comes up with "could not perform operation due to an I/O error". So I assume the disk is buggered (surprised me how suddenly this happened, without Windows warnings that the drive was about to fail) and wouldn't be trusting it again. Fortunately, it was only a backup for the storage D drive so I haven't lost anything...
I'll take the advice & chuck in a new large capacity drive (probably a WD green 2 or 3 TB)... the WD's have been pretty good to me. Cheerz all

I find that trying to attempt repairs through Windows is pointless.
Hirens boot/Gparted is how I investigate or affect repairs if possible. my 2c.

The above ... windows and hard drive repairs are fraught with failure.
