A 24-year-old Waikiki man has been charged after his burning car was clocked doing more than 50km/h over the speed limit on Kwinana Freeway on Saturday.

Police say the Subaru WRX had smoke billowing from under the bonnet as it sped past a police patrol car at 1am on Saturday, spraying it with engine oil.

Officers stopped the car near Beeliar Dve and used a fire extinguisher douse its burning engine before charging the driver with reckless driving and excess 0.05.
