Default New proposed car congestion tax

MOTORISTS will be automatically hit with a special levy when they drive on congested roads under proposed tax changes now before the Federal Government.

The new tax on drivers would include an "access charge" and a "user charge". This tax structure would replace existing charges motorists pay - federal fuel excise, GST on petrol, state registration charges, stamp duty on registration and road tolls.

The amount of the user charge would depend on the size of the vehicle and the wear it causes roads, an environmental charge related to engine capacity, a levy to cover the costs of crashes and the congestion charge.

if this new tax comes in it will mean the death of the SUV & v8's... i reckon alot more Wrx's will be on the road

Agreed. But when you think about it, your rego goes off your current vehicle weight and engine capacity already doesnt it? So it wouldnt really have a greater effect on the changes. It will pretty much just put all the taxes into one.

None of the other above mentioned taxes will go down.

How are they meant to track where you drive?

I dont trust them to drop the other taxes after they introduce the new ones. Wouldnt it mean fuel would go down to like 80c a litre?

Maybe they'll make it mandatory for every car to have some sort of meter in their car?...just like Singapore does

Aliminium foil hat time?

Truckies got smart (big call ) and started regeristing their trailers in NT and avoiding all the penelties.

As Hurt said, nothing will be cheaper. Instead costs to the public will go up, while the government 'appears' to be doing something constructive for a change.
