06 STi First Basic Mods? Flash ECU Tune?

Hi All

I have this mate with an 06 STi and he would like to add a couple of basic mods.

1. A 3" Stainless Exhaust, Turbo back, mandrel bend (the usual). Previously he has had an APS Exhaust, anyone else suggest something? He would like to spend around $1,500 on an exhaust.

2. Flash ECU Tune? He has looked at the ECUTEK website. Or should he get a piggyback ECU e.g. Unichip. My mate reckons APS have them ready to go for the 2.5 STi.

A couple of questions please.

1. How does Subaru feel about a full exhaust in regard to Warranty?
2. If my mate got a Flash tune, is it detectable and/or is it an issue with Warranty?
3. Who does Flash ECU tunes in Perth?

Thanks All.

at the end of the day, its mod at ur own risk. nobody can preciesly tell u what the warranty ramifications are with exhaust and particularly, ecutek. it'd be a smarted move to buy a full replacement (not flash or piggy) ecu and on the slim chance you have engine warranty issues, u can put the OEM ECU back in. it's not like subaru dont know about ecutek, so im sure theyve got some means to check to see if its been reflashed.

but if i were u and u'r worried about warranty, just do the zorst and intake. ride the warranty period out. and then start modding to ur hearts content.

thx 15-10-2005 05:01 PM

Or just do what the rest of the people do and kill the warranty in the butt :D

Personally I'd do the zorst and intake, then let the car settle in. Get any of those new car things sorted out under warranty. Then when your car's all happy mod the crap out of it. In the mean time you have saved up some good cash for the means.

I had a few months from when I sold my WRX and picked up the Evo. Never have had so much money in my savings :D

RexcellentSTi 15-10-2005 05:11 PM

Thanks Guys

So Zorst, how much do they cost and where is the best place to go. Bruce has suggested Leigh from Rev Limit in the past. Also if my mate got a Unichip and then later had Warranty issues, I suppose the Unichip could be taken out.

With the Zorst doesn't this need a tune to be of any performance value and to ensure no mechanical issues e.g from the decrease in back pressure etc.

depends if you want a jap brand exhaust or a local one.

A custom/local one with your choice of muffler style would work out cheaper(ss). The jap brands are all cat-back - and you would have to get a dump pipe made up $500+. Tho you cant beat the qulaity of jap brands.

I went with the jap cat back, and got a dump pipe by RMS.

RexcellentSTi 15-10-2005 05:33 PM

I reckon he would be safe to go Cat Back and get an ECUtek.

Thanks Guys, wish him luck. I will let you know the power gain.

Rick,

If you're going to Ecutek you may as well do the turbo back exhaust & intake, this will also save you $$$ on tuning in the future. :icon_idea

keep us posted on the dyno results.

BTW, I've been looking into the new unichip also....should be out in about a month I'm told!

cheers

Get your mate to save up enough to get 3" Turbo Back Exhaust($1500-2000), 400hp fuel pump ($250) and Ecutek 3 ($1500-2000) and do it all in one hit. He'll have a tyre frying 200+kw atw GUARANTEED.

Race Torque in Wangara or Maximum Motorsport in Malaga can do the lot.

before you do anything, go do some defensive (offensive?) driving at AHG, Motorplex, Wanneroo test n tune....get a feel for the car...and a platform to base the mods you want and most of all NOTICE the difference!

Hey Bruce

My mate has always done a turbo back exhaust, but apparently Subaru says that it has to be Cat Back to keep the Warranty. I will get my mate to call Subaru tomorrow (discretely) to enquire.

He has to go away next week, but it will be booked in to do the mods for the following week and I will keep you all posted.

Cheers,

Rick.

Cool, they sound like great mods and within his budget. Thanks.

Id do turbo back and just keep the stock in the shed if u have problems latler just change it back ... Exaughst that is

IMHO the risk to void the warranty with all the mods you have discussed is relatvely low....you are doing what many have done before. Go the mods!

RexcellentSTi 16-10-2005 09:51 AM

Sounds awesome to me Bruce.

GO THE MODS!

Yeah definitely keep the stocker handy. What about when you take it in for servicing at the Dealer?

BM747 16-10-2005 09:57 AM

Yeah Race Torque is your place Rexcellent. Just had my Foz XT tbe'd, filtered, dropped on its ass, vf30'd and ECUtek 2'd. They tuned it for 95RON (i live in Broome) and squeezed out 160kwatw @ 12psi. Dave and Lane know what they are doing.

They also maintain that the ECUtek is a good way to go, because unless the mechanics at subaru actually know to look for it, they are none the wiser

Okay, thanks. Race Torque in Wangara is a good option. Cheers.

I saw your post on another forum, and you stated you were getting springs installed at your first service. Which springs do you have in mind, Rexcellent?

I was just going to get the STi springs from the Dealer at the 5,000 kms service, but they are quite expensive. What are you getting Huy and what can everyone else suggest for me and of course my mate.

NVRENUF 16-10-2005 08:06 PM

Would i t be better to just get some springs from somewhere like king springs or somthing $300 for whole set cheaper way or Coil overs $1000 second hand or $1799 brand new... an prob better handling and ride hight than what subaru would give u
and u save some money on top

Yeah i'm doing the same mate. They are VERY expensive (as are all Subaru parts) but everyone i've talked to only have praise for them; in terms of handling ability and ride quality.
I didn't want to drop the car too low, as i have a lip, so they should be perfect. I also plan to get some hardended top mounts too.

I obviously haven't used any aftermarket springs, but a couple of guys i know rate the H&R springs very highly. Decent lowering, quiet, and great handling suitable for both the track & street.

Yeah I agree, I don't want my car to be too low and with the ride quality uncomfortable.

BTW I love that front lip, it's very cool ;)

I like King Springs and I had a set on one of my first WRX's. Thanks for the info, decisions... decisions.

Huy 16-10-2005 08:25 PM

You can get them too :D

They look really nice on the 06 STi.

RexcellentSTi 16-10-2005 08:28 PM

They do look awesome. Yeah I have been eyeing them off since I got the First STi accessory sheets. Around $700 aren't they?

creepin 16-10-2005 08:42 PM

why would u bother changing an sti computer
im getting 280hp at all 4 out of the stock management with stock turbo

frontmount
3 inch exhaust
20psi
air filter

sure its not alot of horsepower but it is as streetable as the day i picked it up
cant think of a better 12 second daily driver.

Yeah that is a good alternative. I am not sure that my mate or I would want to test the 06 STi with 20 psi, it maybe a little too high with the semi forgies.

Huy 16-10-2005 08:51 PM

Creepin' - Is yours an 04 STi?

EXPLICIT 16-10-2005 11:05 PM

there's a fair bit of STI parts available via US online stores. Do a looooooooong hard search.

Rex,

I suggest you or your mate have a read of this link.... (Become a member if need be)

http://www.wrx.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19984

While its not fully complete you will get an idea...

Best bang for ya buck would be to do the intake, fuel pump (maybe ?), turbo back exhaust and dare I mention it get it ECUTek'ed.

Maximum Motorsport or RaceTorque are ya people.

J

aDe 17-10-2005 04:17 AM

sorry it's off the topic a bit, talking about exhaust where can we get custom made cat back exhaust piping for best bucks here? my mate was asking and he doesn't want those expensive places :D

jEstEr? 17-10-2005 08:06 AM

if you want a cheap exhaust then go no further than OzFit in Vic Park (Teddington Ave, across the road from John Huges) i got a turbo back exhaust for my car for well under $300

That said, you do get what you pay for.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I think Race Torque will be the go. Definitely TB Exhaust, intake, fuel pump and ECUTek. My mate will book in his car for next week.

Rick.

Just out of interest Maximums have done 1 x 06 STi and got a reasonable amount of power and a shitload of torque out of it. Full exhaust and ECUtek 1 got 180 odd KW and 460ish nm. They are the 1st to ECUtek an 06 in Aus and are developing it with MRT. So food for thought!

Jimmah 17-10-2005 09:09 AM

Fuk that ECUtek krap
Motec all tha way

Geez food for thought, I am full - buffet Style :D

So with T/B Exhaust, ECUTek 3, 400 HP Fuel pump and Intake = easy 200 KW ATW and dare I say it maybe 500 NM of Torque

nauli 18-10-2005 07:11 AM

OK, your only real option at the moment for a tune upgrade is an ECUTek. Forget Motec, Autronic etc because the MY06 is fly by wire plus there are many other computer differences compared to ALL previous models so these computers won't do the job (and don't let anyone tell you any different).
As Shane says, Steve at Maximum Motorsport has done an exhaust and ECUTek on an MY06 STi and with a very conservative tune (standard boost) has the car developing MORE torque at 2500 rpm than a modified MY02+ STi develops at its MAXIMUM. I've seen the printout and it is very impressive. So if I was you I would talk to MMS.
If you're serious about lowering the car and dramatically improving its handling PM me ....I can put you on to a set of DMS coilovers for around $1500 which will give you infinite height adjustment and excellent handling & ride.

BALISTC 18-10-2005 07:34 AM
Forget Motec, Autronic etc because the MY06 is fly by wire plus there are many other computer differences compared to ALL previous models so these computers won't do the job (and don't let anyone tell you any different).
Well I'm going to say different..

Motec will run fly by wire NOT a problem....not to mention that all the changes that the MY06 has over the MY05, wont be a problem for the Motec either, if he ever did decide to go down that path.
