I'm heading down south today for a week and am a bit worried some of the smaller towns might not have any 98RON as I’m going via Pemby probably to see some friends.

Will I fark up my STI if I put 96RON (premium) into it? The manual recommends 98 but says 96 is ok at the sacrifice of some power. Oh yeah it's stock tune.

Hey Albany people I might see you round Sat doing some Yorkies heh heh.

Cheers.
You wont see me.....Ill be in Perth. Would have been up for a cruise if I was in Albany.

Best way is to use a knock amp and listen to how bad it rattles.

I won't use Caltex Vortex 98 at all based on that reason, everytime I've had it in the car it rattles like all buggery! (when i boot it)

However this is the internet and everyone has their own opinions :)

BP 98 - works, why change formula when it works.

My last tune was done on Vortex 98 anyway. Guess I just have more of a safety margin on BP when I do run it.

Solid diet of BP for the next month anyway. No Vortex 98 in SA or Tassie yet.

Yea Phizzle haven't seen inside but have heard it isn't pretty. A tank or two here or there is cool if you have to but regular use pretty seriously fouls things up from what I have heard.

OlisSTI 22-08-2008 11:09 AM

Yeah but BP shut at like 5pm only Caltex stay open.

Just for fun I tried some 96RON. Yuck. Idles bad, no power at all and eats through fuel like nothing (got about 400ish km on a tank at constant 120km/h). I passed 3-4 towns on the way down from perth and only saw closed servos after dark and the caltex I stopped at to refuel had standard vortex and unleaded only.

In Denmark now, they have 98 RON gonna dry out this tank and put the good stuff back in. Never putting this shit in again unless it's really required.

^^^ What he said. It tinges everything orange/brown, looks alot like the color of rust. There's a pic I've seen where someone had 2 turbos next to each other showing the size of the wastegates. One of them looks like it had some octane booster running through it for some time! I'll see if I can dig it up

whoah why would octane booster do that? Can't be healthy!

mattmy99 22-08-2008 04:22 PM

U98 and Vortex 98 both come from the same tank at CSBP in Kwinana. Exactly the same fuel, no additives or anything. Stories of cars running differently on U98 and vortex98 are BS. It's exactly the same fuel, delivered by a different truck.

no their not actually.

BP98 IS different than vortex.
