Driveline upgrades
Since I have to replace the box I'm wondering if this would be the right time to do some preventative upgrades.
I believe the rear diff is replaced with the 6 speed. Should I also look at doing the centre at the same time to save on labor & future breakage? With budget & a 400hp threshold in mind what would be the best option for an upgraded centre?

Not sure Stace, I'll find out when I replace it hopefully next week.
It doesn't free wheel unless the clutch is in & even when the clutch is in it makes a huge clanking sound every rotation. Also you can't select 1st, when it happened it sounded like something was loose on the bottom of the car & was dragging against the road. Pretty set on the six speed, I do too many city k's for a dog. I've also read the 6MT boxs flex a lot less than the 5's. Besides if I went straight cut I'd want a hollanger & that'd mean I couldn't afford to eat.. I like eating. So any thoughts on diffs?

i wouldn't do anything to the centre diff personally, unless you have have a rear mechanical diff
the front diff is probably worth modding (eg cusco/kazz 1.5 way) or get the DCCD 6MT centre diff with controller |

Easiest and cheapest option is to go 6 speed with No DCCD. You can retain the rear diff you got now and just drop in the right ratio (usually 3.9) crown wheel and pinion in the diff. If you decide to replace the diff, you dont have to go up to the larger R180 so dont get talked in to it if you dont really need it as it'll cost you more dollars as you'll also need to upgrade the entire rear end (driveshaft, hubs, brakes etc)
This conversion could cost you as little as $5000, upto $10k depending on what options you pick. If you got any questions drop me a PM. And while the box is out, also suggest replacing the clutch plate, cheap job to do if your clutch is even slightly showing signs of wear. Last edited by BLU WRX; 06-11-2005 at 11:25 PM. |
