Default Gearbox salvage

I had the 6 speed installed at MMS last week. After some of the horror stories I wasn't sure if I'd made the right decision.

So far seems to have been a success, serial number lines up with an 05 STi. They changed over the diff & upped the pressure plate. Only thing that worries me is it's a little notchie when the cars not in motion. Tho Steve assures me this is due to the new clutch & flywheel bedding in... we'll see I guess.

Anyway to my question, are there any parts of my old box I should salvage? The box hasn't been opened so I'm not even sure what was busted, is there any point in finding out? Is the centre diff attached to the box?

the front diff is in your box
centre diff should still be with car (?)
wouldm't need to change it if you're changing out your rear diff to match the box

keep the box if can
can use it to build a doggie on the side
its worth something still, even the rear diff

Just looking at the receipt.. I read it wrong it says "s/h viscous diff centre (rear)"

My rear was stuffed so they replaced it, this maybe a stupid question but I thought only centre diffs were viscous?

Well it's not worth much to me, so if anyone wants it let me know.

uh, if you put a 6 speed in, the centre diff to my understanding is didfferent to that of a 5 speed..

if they've not opened the box up, you still have the front diff, centre diff, and everything inside the box, crack it open, might be worth while to see whats naffed..

or i can do it for you.. seems ill have time now on saturday..

Cheers for the offer Denv, Sav's gonna crack it for me. Quite curious to see what damage I did.

Sweet.. they feel notchy sometimes smooth other times...dont worry bout it tuned.... Welcome to the launch pad. as the italian test drivers say when they take ferrari customers around modena and sit in 2nd the whole track "She no break, She no break"

Best bit about 6 speed is it gives you the extra gear to keep in your power band when chopping GTR's. You will pull on one with similar power to weight once you get to 5th and 6th.

reline LWSP gets rid of the notchy feel for a bit but there are horror storys for that too. I ran it for 50,000 k's with changes every 10 and it was fine. however last change i did was to the new motul gear oil and that stuff made it feel silky smooth. give it a shot. and i second polars last comment you will love how easy it is to stay in the power band with that box

Cool dan I'll give the Motul a go next time I change it. Doesn't bother me much, it's just in my experience 'force' & 'gearboxes' don't normally go well together.

Agree with both about the power band, it's taken out a bunch of my lag, feels like it's 'ready to go' in every gear. I don't think it's done my 0-100 times any favors since I'm now messing with third. Also I pretty sure I'll be changing into 6th over the qtr. But the car is a whole lot more responsive & more fun to drive so a worthy compromise.

Also have any 'converties' had the gear knob upholster so it looks like the normal STi shifts? Atm the whole bag comes up & down with the top ring (if you can picture what I'm saying). Steve said some get the lower part re attached to the stick.. like in a normal STi.

nah you hit 5th in the 1/4 not 6th and you only just need it if you could up your redline to 8.5k you'd probably be able to hold 4th
