Default Tow Balls?

Hiya,

Me dak dak is a daily and doesn't get thrashed and the need for a tow ball has arisen as I'm sick of doing trips to bunnings and having to borrow the dad-in-laws 25 year old heap of shit sigma. This is a monotonous and painful experience..

So can anyone recommend me to a good place where I can get a tow ball fitted to my GDB? I'm after one of those detachable type ones where the ball and bar can be removed when it's not in use.

Cheers

Chris

Hey Chris,

I have used Autoextra in ozzy park for my towing requirements. They are Hayman Reese and straight forward install system!

/insert plug here :
You could find out if the '99-'02 forester is the same fitment as the GD as i have a spare one here you could have.

Get a genuine one - about $270 - DIY install includes removable hitch and wiring harness

Yeah thats what I paid at Bunbury Subaru
you may get it a little cheaper in Perth
they are a bit of a bitch to fit up by yourself tho - realy need two people - one to hold it in place and another to screw a couple of bolts in
and the rear bumper must be loosened so that it hangs down a bit for installation as the tow bar sits right up inside and behind the rear bumper
once its on you only see the center draw bar and plug connection

Well fella's.. Months after I posted this I finally got around to actually doing something about the Tow Ball.

So me and the missus bought the Hayman Reese jobbie. Quite good and only $285 at Westcott for the kit (uninstalled).

So I've hooked up the bar itself which as Rexy03 said was a prick to install because it was hard to line up everything and shoot the bolts through, plus the instructions were a bit err...

Anyhow I'm at the wiring harness stage, but there doesn't appear to be anywhere on the bar to mount the plug point. I know I need to wire it back in and splice it into my tail-light loom, which is fair enough.. but has anyone got any pics of how they mounted the actual plug socket underneath? im assuming just drill somewhere.. but where?

The genuine bar has a bracket welded on as per pic
behind the lining, inside the boot there is a spare plug on the wiring harness next to and connected to the drivers side taillight for hooking up a towbar plug

On my wags, I have the plug loose inside the boot ala commodore style. I just leave it in the spare wheel well, then pull it out when I need it. Left enough spare lead on it so it can hang outside the tailgate when it's shut.

I mainly use the towball for my bike rack anyway, and every few months trips to the tip with my little 6 by4.

You can buy a flat ribbon type harness for that type of throw it in the boot application
