MY05 STi vs MY06 STI
Hi fellas,
Did a search, but couldn't find any specific thread/discussion. In the position of looking for a STi, and I've decided upon either a MY05 or a MY06/07. Found a few related posts/threads discussed elsewhere: http://motoringjstyle.blogspot.com/2...008-which.html http://www.rexnet.com.au/forum/lofiv...p/t107461.html http://www.rexnet.com.au/forum/lofiv...hp/t79482.html I'm aware of the core differences, and the pros and cons (correct me if I'm wrong or missed anything): - 2L vs 2.5L - Forged internals vs bored out - Torque split ratios (35/65 vs 41/59) - Gear ratios (shorter vs longer) - Aesthetics (I'm leaning towards Peanut, but Piggy doesn't massively offend me either) - Availability (quite a few Piggy's available, not many Peanuts) - Steering angle input sensors and better (plated) diff in the Piggy's Primary use would be daily driver, with occasional skidpan/track outing. Prices don't seem to be massively different between the two, comparing unmodified examples. At this stage, I wouldn't be heavily modifying it...probably just the usual (Verso, TBE, intake, suspension). Not keen on diving into internals, etc. I've driven a couple of MY03's, a MY05, and will def get around to giving a MY06 a crack. Looking to source the car locally. Kinda keen on a Peanut, given the relative higher strength of the engine, revvier nature, and shape. But the daily drivability, lower k's, availability and probably higher re-sale value of the MY06 make it a good choice too. I'm just keen to know what your opinions and experiences are. Cheers, Adrian

I been driving a Piggy for 3 years and Love it to bits.
Simple Mods can fetch you some massive Torque and good HP as well. Im sure the Peanuts are just as good and the guys n girls that drive them will probably agree. |

If by "occasional" you mean 1-2 times per year get the Pig - if you intend tracking it every month or so, go the 05STi.

But why would the 05 be better for more track work? I would have thought the newer the car the better it would be.

I was in the same position a few months back and I got the 05 peanut because I love the shape and I plan to do a ts conversion and stroke it out/rebuild it but that's my dream and everyone's different.
If you want more bang for your buck and you aren't really biased to the look of the peanut I would go for the pig but in saying that If the 05 peanut didn't have the dccd, upgraded interior, 114.3 pcd, etc I would have bought the pig. Hope my opinion helps and goodluck! |

For all intents and purposes you'll just have to row the gears a little more in the 05. The Piggy is a bit more forgiving in traffic but if you enjoy shifting ( which is a pleasure with the 6 speeds ) then you won't really care. DCCD is a little more refined in the piggy but almost everyone seems to put it to the rear for some fun on play days anyway so makes no difference.
Unless you think at some stage in the future you will do a fair bit of track work I would just take whatever of either comes up as the best example and rate them equally.

Either way, you really need to finish the car off with a porn set of 19" Rays CE28's ;-)

The Subaru boxer 2.5L motor EJ257 comes with hypereutectic pistons.
high silicon content - think ceramic. This is a very good material for the purpose being strong, has a low temperature/expansion, and cheaper to produce than forged. But, there is a little something you should know - they shatter under detonation stress - suddenly without warning. Detonation can be prevented by not tuning the car (heresy on this forum) or using a good tuner who will know how far to go on timing, boost etc. There is a knock detector option with MoTec but most tuners will not trust it. Comparing the 2.5L with the STi 2L (EJ207 with forged pistons), dollar for dollar, is a close call and depends on your driving style and needs. The 2.5L can give a lot more torque up to about 4000rpm so is easier to drive and better for street use. A tuned 2L with forged internals can give almost as much torque at 4 to 6000rpm, with more boost and more aggressive timing, and does not drop off at 6000rpm as does the 2.5L so more power is available at the high end making it better for the track. usual disclaimers - from a bit of personal experience, workshop rumor, forum trawlimg especially NASIOC. |
