Nice. $5500 is good for a V3 STI front cut install. Do you get the 4 pot front brakes too? And make sure they swap the rear diff too since the V3 STI gearbox runs 4.44 ratios.

V3 STI = my97 STI
V4 STI = my98 STI

yes, 4 pot breaks too, gotta add gst to that, sounds reasonible to me. I think this will make a better investment than just getting the head fixed. definitly will be keeping the old parts, so should help bring the cost down a bit.

what else do i need to look out for? you say should get the front and rear dif done to suit. We were just estimating accross the phone, so we havnt gone into too much detail. i'm gonna go see Tracy in person this week

Well if they are going to swap the V3 STI 4.44 gearbox in, they need to put the V3 STI 4.44 rear diff in too. Your current rear diff ratio (3.54) is not compatible with the v3 STI gearbox.

As well as the 4 pots brakes, you should also get the front alloy control arms from the V3 STI front cut installed. And maybe the v3 STI 2.7 steering rack too. Though Im not sure if thats any different from your current one, so it may not be necessary.

I'll ask about the control arms and stearing rack,
i'm told the STI speedo wont work as it is digital, but thats no biggy, just keep e existing one.

i recently had the dif and gearbox changed to 4.44, but its not sounding to crash hot. makes a whiney noise in first and chips 4th. so i think if i'm gonna spend the money i will need to have this changed too.

thanks for you help, i'll keep you posted as i go along,

just got the quote back to fix the head............
$3000 so i would say its definitly going to be better value to change out the whole engine.

what happens if the new one is a lemon? i should get it replaced/fixed on warranty. is there a big risk of buying a new engine and it just beeing a peice of crap?

if he's doing a proper conversion, the speedo should work as the loom should be transferred as well.

also,
Standard engine from my 97 (i think with VF20?), upgrading to the 97 STI and the bigger VF23 turbo.
Am i gonna get a big differnce in power?

Red book have the standard WRX at;
Power 155kW @ 5600rpm
Torque 290Nm @ 4000-4000rpm
Acceleration 0-100Km/h (secs) 6.5

and the STI at;
well.... looks like its not listed? go figure.

if the differnce is minimal, i might consider just a standard engine swap (price fitted around $3200 ex GST) then selling my car and getting a newer, nicer, faster car

That is about what JWS quoted me.
They quoted me $4-4.5 for a V4 engine and ecu swap drive in/drive out.
I didn't get a quote on a box though.

Your 97 should have a TD04 and the STI makes about 207kw.
Some one else will paste up the exact spec's in a minute. Guaranteed.

Great! did you go through with the conversion? did you get much more pick up and go? do you think it was worth while?
