Radiator Coolant
Hi all. I have to change the timing belt on MY00WRX in a couple of weeks time. Would i need to flush the radiator!! Also Subaru O/Park are charging $62 for coolant.
What are your thought's on the radiator & can i get some cheaper coolant to suit!! Vic |

I use genuine coolant, but if funds are tight the flush the cooling system through the heater hoses, drain everything and put in aftermarket coolant.

Just make sure it is 90+, the cheapo ones are usually only 60+. I've been using Tectaloy pre mixed for years without a problem.

Talk to MMS who have seen possible problems in their rally cars with some aftermarket coolants, so they now recommend Subaru....

Bought mine from Repco.
They have a listing of the one/type you have to use for Subaru Impreza's. Has to be a certain type, cant remember the details though but think Ethylene Glycol based rather than mineral. If you dont have a hydrometer then go premixed or be a little heavy on the mix as Glycol with the wrong specific gravity will eat your cooling system.

Careful, certain Aftermarket coolants can promote oxidisation + wear throughout your motor.
Go by what the guys above have said, you could always utilise distilled water; but that wouldn't cool your motor effectively. A few words of advice: When you're flushing your motor, jack it up a bit at the front (helps prevent airlocks), remove the coolant line from your header tank to your turbocharger (this is where you'll use a garden hose to flush everything out as it's virtually the highest point of the motor), drop the bottom radiator hose, which will drop everything in your radiator, and allow a path for the stuff you're pushing out from the top to go through.
