Heater core shouldn't keep you off the road. I've been driving without a heater core for about 3 months now. I spoke to the guys at tenagah about it and they seem to know what to do. All I need now is the money and for them to source one when i'm ready. Drop in and speek to Abdus about it. You can find their contact details somewhere on this site by doing a simple search.

plug the heater feed and return into themselves on both sides (engine and core) that way you wont leak fluid everywhere.

as far as replaceing the core, its not hard, just time consuming.

12 buckingham drive wangara? i think

I didn't get the heater core fixed yet, and i didn't check my last receipt from them to see labour costs. But i'd say it's reasonable

good luck getting a workshop manual unless it is genuine subaru.
I am not to sure about the 99's but i know when i did my heater core in my 96 it wasnt too bad, took me about 1.5 hours to do the whole job but that is a bit older than yours so it may take longer. (i dont have airbags)

Regards

Tom

If you are going to change the whole heater box over make sure it is from a car with the same shape dash my98 on I think, because the boxes look the same but are not, there is a slight change in shape from the earlier ones where the boxes join each other, I discovered this when I put decided to upgrade my 95 WRX with 98 WRX heater & aircon while I had the dash off, the good thing is the actual cores are identical & you can swap them from box to box, I've got one from a MY97 low k jap import you can have for $40, looks like new.
