Why are WRX's so hard to sell?

Hey dudes,

As some people may have noticed there is a string of MY05-MY07 WRX's on the market that have been on carsales for months. I asked some of the people on Perth-WRX that are selling MY06/07 WRX's or STI's and they reckon that after weeks of having their cars on sale no one sensible enough to actually organise money for a car comes and has a look at it.

Is it the fact that no one can get a carloan for a car over 5 years old (not 100% sure if this is true) or because people assume they're trashed to death once they've hit that age? Even completely stock MY06 WRX's on carsales stick around for ages.

The guy who I purchased my MY06 WRX of said he had all sorts of fools come and try get a loan of him (pay the car of over 6 months or so) or just put in completely stupid offers.

I myself am looking to sell my WRX to upgrade to a newer model or switch up to something completely different later on in the year. Except at this point I'm wondering if I'll be selling the WRX before next year.

Has the market always been this bad or has something happened in recent times that has put everyone off Subarus ?

cheers

All depends on the asking price mate, if your asking crack prices then it'll sit there forever and if your selling it at the market price or slightly lower you'll sell the car no probs.

Consider the price of older STi's (02 $18-22k) and aim for around that price or lower as that what you'll be competing against.

ImPreSiV 29-03-2011 08:37 PM

No one is buying anything at the moment.

teejay 29-03-2011 08:38 PM

There is 1000000000 WRX's on the market.

It either needs to stand out for

- mods
- kms
- condition
- price

Or it just gets lost in the sea of WRX's for sale.

People are always going to want to buy the cheapest car they can get so if its over priced it wont sell.

My 100 sold to the first person to look at it.

Good condition, honest ad, one of the best priced in the state.

MY99GT 29-03-2011 08:39 PM

I had my WRP10 on the market for quite a while and had pretty much zero interest.. but in my case I don't think many people have heard of a WRP10 so there isn't a huge market for them. Mine was the cheapest on Carsales in Aus, but still just had a few calls, some promises to come and look but no-one actually had the cash - and some didn't even bother turning up.

However, I have just been offered a very cheap Version 5 STI which is probably going to force me to trade my car in and take a big loss on the remaining finance :( The things we do for cars!

Financing is still very hard to get as banks don't want to lend.

Pablo668 29-03-2011 08:47 PM

I want to buy a WRX, not really sure what type yet but GC8's are my favourite.

The prices in Perth shit me to be honest, but the prices are what the prices are.
I'm not buying right now as I want to take a trip back to Japan around July and I'm saving up my dosh for it. Then I'm going to save up more dosh so that when the time finally comes I will have enough for a deposit on a loan, any stamp duty I cop and hopefully money in the bank for any mechanical eventualities that decide to bite me in the arse.

In the mean time I'm watching the market and learning what I can about these cars.

I made so many stupid mistakes when I bought my first one.....that it still hurts now, years later.

But yeah, seems like no ones buying right now.

if my credit rating wasnt shot id be smashing down 30k for ISPYSTI in a heartbeat... :D

ImPreSiV 29-03-2011 09:02 PM

Is it back up for sale??

92 RS 29-03-2011 09:06 PM

its on carsales at the moment so i assumed so...

rubasu 29-03-2011 09:07 PM

I sold mine within 6-8 weeks earlier this year and bought the new one from the previous owner a week after he put it up for sale :)

I borrowed a fair chunk last year with no issue, even with a marginal credit score due to owing tons of coin.

As long as you have established income and no black marks against your name finance is easy enough.

BALISTC 29-03-2011 09:13 PM

Simple equation.

- Lots on the market.
- Sellers want reasonable money for them.
- Buyers want to pay next to nothing for them.

BLUES 29-03-2011 09:13 PM

The vast majority of cars that do not sell are over-priced. Even more so when the market is flat.

mARC 29-03-2011 09:14 PM

This is always a constant though, yes?

BALISTC 29-03-2011 09:18 PM

Yeah it is, but combined with a flat market and what seems to be a glut of cars for sale currently, the problem is exacerbated.

mattmy99 29-03-2011 09:18 PM

Institutes are still giving out money like it's going out of fashion.
Priced accordingly, cars are as easy to sell as ever before.
Cnuts are just asking crack prices I think. (EDIT: peoples expectations of what their vehicle is worth is somewhat skewed)
I sold two of my cars within 2 weeks of advertising. In fact, I didn't even advertise one. I told people I was thinking about selling on a Saturday, and by Monday I had cash in my hand.
Take into account kms, age, condition, the market etc and price the vehicle to suit, and it'll sell.

teejay 29-03-2011 09:21 PM

Realise that just because we live in WA, your WRX is not worth 5k more.

Still a damn hot car though.

It's not just the private market, dealership's are seeing less people through the doors too.
Considering the new WRX is the most powerful ever sold in Aus, and the price has changed a minimal amount since it was first introduced in '94, I for one thought it would fly out the door, but not really.

MCL 29-03-2011 09:47 PM

Do people think that the Redbook private sale prices are a good indication of what to list your car at or around, or are they too low / high?

johnvk7 29-03-2011 09:51 PM

I would look online and see what similar cars are going for, then price accordingly. Redbook is a rough guide, but some cars get looked after better then others.

zmk 29-03-2011 09:51 PM

Looks like riceman's STI has just joined the party :)

Not sure if i agree with that, our YTD sales are higher than last year in New Cars (which was our record year - and we are the biggest dealer in the state for Nissan). The manufacturers actually increased our targets by 30% this year :(

For used cars it is a little quieter currently, but i expect that to change in the coming months.. as the availability of new cars slows down (Japan quake causing production/supply problems) the used market should take up the slack. But i'm expecting more info next week, as i think manufacturers are keeping quiet until after Japanese fiscal year finishes before releasing detailed info on the effect of the quake/tsunami and rolling lackouts.

Yeah I wished him luck with the sale.

mine has done 80,000km less and is the same price.

thats for nissans though, not subaru.

johnvk7 29-03-2011 09:54 PM

I didn't know Nissan made a WRX?

MY99GT 29-03-2011 09:56 PM

i'm talking about the market in general, the only dealer who has really lost out this year is Toyota who have dropped 2% in market share...

I'll have a look at the sales details at work tomorrow, i think Subaru sales are up.

kid 29-03-2011 10:00 PM

I bought my rex a couple weeks ago from the seller one week after he placed the ad. Before this i was looking for over a year.

Was looking for a either a bugeye sti or peanut eye sti.

With the exception of maybe 2 good examples (which i didn't buy because i didn't have the funds at the exact time), most cars i saw were either over priced, highly modded, or high kms....sometimes a combination of all three....

I think bottom line is that prices are too high....at least that was my experience when looking....

Although having said that....as soon as i got my car i noticed a couple of really good cars turn up....

Such as Luigis.....

Why didnt you put it up for sale 2 weeks earlier!!!! You got all the mods i want too.... :(

Jezza 29-03-2011 10:01 PM

I think its due to the fact that early models are so cheap now, and as they are usually regarded as the classic, favourite wrx, most buyers cannot justify spending 2 to 3 times more money on what is fundamentally the same car.

Further to this, I think that these cars are not worth as much as they used to be, as there are more around etc...some people have realised this, some have not I guess

To be fair, Impreza set a new record in January, and Forester rules the SUV market, as it has for years.
But I don't see the new WRX moving quite like I thought it would. Which is the point I was making.

92 RS 29-03-2011 10:11 PM

i wonder if Rally Australia (WRC) had an impact on the local sales market?

johnvk7 29-03-2011 10:16 PM

There was nothing really like the WRX when it came out, not ADM anyway. Now there's a variety of grey imports it has to compete with.

teejay 29-03-2011 10:48 PM

Like what?

There is nothing on the market that is mid sized, 4wd, turbo for 45k.
