A blank canvas; what would you have done differently?

So there is a collective experience of about 40 trillion years on P-WRX. But everyone has regrets, if your car was returned back to OEM and you were given all your spent $$$$$ back, what would you do different, and why?

This probably sounds pretty lame, so I've donned the flamesuit, but I'm sure everyone has regrets, and maybe some of the newer generations of modifiers can learn a bit from others' mistakes?

For me, I would have spent less on the cosmetic mods to my last car, and invested in a stroker kit and twin scroll.

Damo69 12-09-2011 07:22 PM

Not lost i.e no return on sale 40 odd k in 2 years on various cars

MY99GT 12-09-2011 07:23 PM

I wouldn't have bought my WRP10, instead i would have bought a GC8 possibly a V5/6 STI and used the excess money for a few power mods.

The joys of hindsight :(

Patch 12-09-2011 07:23 PM

I would have forked out the extra $13k and got myself a '99-'00 STI. Currently have stacks of loose ends to chase to achieve what I could have had in the first place.

Having said that, it has been nice tinkering and learning more about my car and getting it to where I want it to be. So it's not such a bad thing now, seeing as I have the time to spend on it.

Damo69 12-09-2011 07:31 PM

The more i think the more it was worth every cent....

Kato 12-09-2011 07:31 PM

Purchase type ra cut in half from Japan. Transplant into Aussie shell.

No tuning, mods or anything. Slap on a set of r-comps and drive it till it pops!

Alternatively, I've always wanted a 2 door. Do same and enjoy the car.

ill_spector 12-09-2011 07:53 PM

buy a bug eye sti instead of a peanut wrx

Soksta 12-09-2011 07:59 PM

Would have waited for the 09 models to come out and would have purchased one in WR Blue instead of black.
It would still be mildly modified, but with what I know now, I could have saved a bit of money for other mods :D

mARC 12-09-2011 08:01 PM

Over insured the car, installed NOS, and pissed off the leader of an Asian motorbike/car gang.

Seriously!

MattuZ 12-09-2011 08:28 PM

would have left it stock and enjoyed having money in my bank account

teejay 12-09-2011 08:38 PM

Torched my black car the day it got insured for 18k.

Either that or spent 300 dollars on some injectors, and bought a 6 speed. Car would have almost been perfect then. For all its bs and faults, I still miss it every day.

pointless thread

kid 12-09-2011 09:31 PM

Lucky for me i consulted pwrx before buying...and spent agesssssss researching.....

Plus it's my third car so i've outgrown all the fast and furious shit....

If it wasn't for pwrx i would be in a club spec evo 8 right now, throwing money at it to make it an STI...

mARC 12-09-2011 09:42 PM

It's the entire point of the thread?

BALISTC 13-09-2011 06:25 AM

I wouldn't change a thing.

Rexxar 13-09-2011 07:19 AM

I secretly love Evos.... but..

Strubaru 13-09-2011 07:26 AM

situation no win?

rush for a change of atmosphere :icon_fara

RS_207 13-09-2011 07:40 AM

Would have bought a WRX in the first place and saved myself the heartache and mountains of cash.

jEstEr? 13-09-2011 08:24 AM

Would have purchased the Evo7 I was going to back in 2006 rather than listen to Stace

RUSSGT 13-09-2011 08:24 AM

Realised I only use my car at the track so would have bought a 2010 spec c full cut and transplanted into a gc8 shell. Track hack heaven! Then bought a bunky for the occasional time i ever need to drive anything other than my wifes car.

trainwrex 13-09-2011 08:46 AM

would have saved my money then bought a 458 challenge from the US...

ImPreSiV 13-09-2011 08:55 AM

I would have not listened to the wife, not sold the bug STI and kept on playing.

Saying that, I am happy I bought the 11. It's a great car to drive, looks hot and goes quick enough.

But, I love the look of a nicely done GC8, with basic mods, handling, and power... If I had $20k to spend on a car, a gc with the works, just like Kato's would be the go! a raw, mechanical subaru... not electronic, like the new ones...

Master D 13-09-2011 09:04 AM

I wouldnt have done anything different.....

Im happy that i had the RS to learn on before i picked up the STi.

Im happy i bought the cars that i wanted and was more than patient on the purchase of the STi.

I would buck the trend thats appearing of "20k + gc = win" and say "20k + gd = win"

Bigger car, more mods and have the option of 3 different front ends :-)

Mister Two 13-09-2011 09:10 AM

I would have put more effort into looking after my paint work.

fatboy 13-09-2011 09:12 AM

looking at it now and knowing what i know i wouldn't have bought my RA i would have had an evo 3, same for the betty i would have bought a 9!

My other halfs X has a lot to answer for, i would now call myself more of a mitsu man than Subi (and i never in a million years would have thought that!)

teejay 13-09-2011 09:17 AM
I would have put more effort into looking after my paint work.
Will be perfect once sprayed - end of the day its 20 year old paint, never going to keep it immac as you use it daily.

easytiger 13-09-2011 10:06 AM

wouldnt change anything
sure ive gone thru 7 sets of wheels, 4 i/c setups, 5 suspension configurations, 3 gearboxes, 2 engines and its sat unloved in the carport for months on end but i've learnt heaps and had a lot of fun along the way
its all worth it when it still puts a smile of your face evry time you jump in

RXqME 13-09-2011 10:17 AM

No regrets yet, havn't done many mods. and i hope i don't regret it when i do mod it!

RUSSGT 13-09-2011 10:19 AM
I wouldn't change a thing.
Really? Not upset you didnt buy an sti in the first place instead of spending way more turning your wrx into an sti?

andrewp 13-09-2011 10:27 AM

Buying this car was probably the stupidest thing I've ever done financially, but I don't regret it at all. All frustrations are wiped away after a sunny arvo drive in the hills

Jezza 13-09-2011 10:32 AM

I'm pretty happy with my decisions.

Lots of fun, lots of learning, and when I think of what I spend, I just think of what other members are doing, and realise I dont spend much in comparison

Everyone spends their money on something, as long as it's something that makes you happy then go for it

XT43 13-09-2011 10:32 AM

Should have spent my money on Coke and hookers.

ALEX. 13-09-2011 10:36 AM

If I could do it over again, I'd not have got my rex the first day I was off my Ps.
I'd have waited and saved.
4 years later (around now) I'd buy Brendon's well-prepped, stripped, caged GC8 and start to learn it slowly with its current near-stock power levels, but with the best handling characteristics I could get from it.
I'd also have slowly been accruing the parts I need to turn it into something like a Ken Block car: power, torque and a dozen sets of tires.
After a year of entering events and really getting to understand how the car behaves with 'lower' power, I would put in a bit more power one bit at a time (instead of dropping in 600+ HP ATW and trying to learn that).
Time attack would be my main interest.

Or I'd have spent it all on blow and hookers.
edit: well someone beat me to it while I was typing didn't they.

Is it running?!?!?

No scope for essay writing that way :P

Surely theres a couple of things you would have changed Joe - injector choice without a doubt.

munya 13-09-2011 11:51 AM

should not have walked away from the 6.5 evo when i wanted one well model 6.5 will have to do for now

mitchwnz 13-09-2011 01:42 PM

Would've probably got an 03-04 model instead of the 08 Betty first, then moved up from there. Although the trade/resale value would've been pretty average.
Really? Not upset you didnt buy an sti in the first place instead of spending way more turning your wrx into an sti?
It's not an STi and I've never built it as one.

Plus, how much do you think I've actually spent on it? I'm not a cheque book racer nor Tino :D
Surely theres a couple of things you would have changed Joe - injector choice without a doubt.
Yeah a few things I MIGHT do slightly differently, but overall, no.

I don't ponder on the past.. especially not when it comes to cars, because it is what it is, its an object not a life changing event.

Sorry the sti headlights, gearbox, block, diff etc made me think it was.

I would think you have spent $25k+?

SupaFly 13-09-2011 03:11 PM

I wouldn't have bought the current wrx i've got.. sooo many problems. Would have liked to save a bit more and get a STi bug or i would have bought an s15 or tt 2jz manual supra.

bugeyerex02 13-09-2011 03:16 PM

I should have got a wagon in the first place instead of a sedan
